The UCSB women’s tennis team continued its hot streak this weekend, sweeping both Wyoming on Friday and San Francisco on Sunday. The Gauchos improve their record to 5-1 overall.

The team has not lost an individual match in 33 games, sweeping its opponents in all five of its wins.

Junior Jill Damion said the team is focused and consistently playing well, not losing a single match point since they played Santa Clara.

“Losing the first match to Santa Clara was probably a good thing, because it got us really focused,” Damion said. “Everyone’s playing really well and really confident.”

On Friday, juniors Natalia Lozano and Jordan Dockendorf defeated Wyoming’s (4-2 overall) team of Simona Synkova and Kim Ginkel in #1 doubles, a duo previously ranked as the #62 doubles pair. Lozano and Dockendorf had to come back from a 6-3 deficit in triple match point before winning 10-8. The pair is still undefeated at 5-0 this season in #1 doubles.

“That was really good for us, to be three points down and come back,” Lozano said.

In singles matches, Damion won in the second slot 6-2, 6-2, while freshman Paola Cos impressed again with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the fifth slot. Damion and Cos lost 8-4 in #2 doubles, but the Gauchos earned the point when junior Sofia Novak and freshman Kiersten Meehan won their match 8-4 in the third doubles slot, giving the Gauchos two of three doubles games necessary to clinch the point.

Against San Francisco (1-6 overall), the team had similar success. Again, the doubles point came thanks in part to Lozano and Dockendorf’s 8-3 win in the #1 match. Dockendorf has yet to lose a match this season in singles or doubles.

UCSB will see if its early season success continues next week as the Big West Tournament play begins.

“Everyone’s ready to play Big West matches. It’ll be nice to see how we do [in conference],” Damion said. “If we play how we can play, there are not many Big West teams that can beat us.”

The next match for the Gauchos is their Big West opener Feb. 19 at Cal State Northridge.
