In the spring election kicking off Monday, students will decide on eight fee reaffirmations that propose maintaining certain previously approved lock-ins.
Students can vote on all initiatives and candidates by logging onto GOLD or https://survey.ucsb.edu/elections/ from April 19 to 22.
MultiCultural Center Support Fee
This support fee of $1.75 per quarter and $1 during Summer Quarter per undergraduate was established in 2002 as a supplement to the $3.25 per quarter fee ($3 during Summer Quarter) reaffirmed through Associated Students to support the facility’s operation and programming costs. In total, students pay $5 per quarter to the MCC.
MCC Office Manager Laura Rivas said in an e-mail that the lock-in fee will ensure that nearly two dozen services they provide to students — including free educational programming, free audio/visual technical support to UCSB student groups for events and monetary co-sponsorship for student organization events — will continue.
“This reaffirmation will not increase your current fees and will allow us to continue providing our campus and community with so many wonderful services,” Rivas said.
According to the proposed ballot, continual support of the fee would also allow the center to hire more students and provide additional programming.
A.S. Community Affairs Board Volunteer Support Fee
The fee of $0.76 per quarter was first approved in 2006 as an addition to the $2.25 per quarter fee — totaling $3.01 — the organization already received in order to maintain a fund for students to finance volunteer projects on campus and in the community.
Ruth Granados, C.A.B. staff advisor, said the lock-in fee is designated for the C.A.B. Foundation, a branch of C.A.B. that grants funding to student organizations or foundations.
“What it does is give C.A.B. some money to grant out to be used in the community by students in the community,” Granados said.
Past projects have included the Family Literacy Program, Best Buddies and the Camp Ronald McDonald Run for Good Times.
Educational Oppor-tunity Program Fee
The EOP fee of $1.25 per quarter — $0.83 during Summer Quarter — would continue to fund services including counseling, mentors and cultural resource centers.
The EOP, according to its Web site, strives for educational equity and social justice, with a focus on assisting first-generation and low-income students.
“EOP services all students while focusing on those who are low-income and first-generation undergraduates. Excellence, achievement, leadership and community serve as the key elements to EOP’s purpose,” the site said.
The EOP administration could not be reached as of press time.
Undergraduate Night/ Weekend Parking Fee
The parking fee of $3.33 per quarter funds night and weekend parking permits issued to undergraduate students. Permits are valid 5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.
Since the fee’s inception, Transportation and Parking Services Director Robert Defindini said, the fee has continuously been reaffirmed.
How Reaffirmations Work
Campuswide fee reaffirmations appear on the ballot every four years and are filed through the Campus Elections Commission. Reaffirmations fail if 60 percent plus one of the voters vote “NO.” CEC fees this year are the UCen Support Fee, the Intercollegiate Athletic Scholarships Fee, the Recreational Sports Fee, The Green Initiative Fund, the MCC Support Fee and the A.S. C.A.B. Volunteer Support Fee.
A.S. reaffirmations appear on the ballot every two years. These lock-ins — the EOP Fee and Undergraduate Night and Weekend Parking — can only be canceled with 60 percent opposing.
