‘Chos Take First Round Exit

On a cold November night in Palo Alto, the UCSB women’s soccer team saw their season end in the NCAA Tournament’s first round with a disappointing 2-0 loss… again. While the defending Big West Tournament Champion Gauchos (9-10-3 overall) put in a spirited first 10 minutes, a quick start that had been lacking in previous contests, an own goal in the 12th seemed to take away the road team’s confidence and opened the floodgates for BYU’s (18-3-2) offense to add another score 27 minutes later.

UCSB Awaits Opener

Long before the team can eye the ultimate prize, UCSB must first prove itself over beatable opponents, the first of whom will be Cal State Los Angeles. The Division II Golden Eagles will tip-off with Santa Barbara at the Thunderdome this Saturday at 3 p.m. as the Gauchos attempt to begin their regular season with a win. Though they have yet to play in an official contest, UCSB is coming off a 101-64 exhibition blowout of Sonoma State last weekend.

Gauchos Look to Bully Bulldogs

The UCSB women’s basketball team will look to avenge last year’s loss to Fresno State when they open the season as host to the Bulldogs tonight at 7 in the Thunderdome. Last year, in their second game of the season, Santa Barbara lost on the road in Fresno 71-54. However, with home court on their side, the Gauchos will look to flip the script.

Golic Goes for the Gold

The term “legend” is usually used to describe an exceptional player long after he has retired. After less than three years at UC Santa Barbara, junior utility Milos Golic of the men’s water polo team, is already earning the reputation of the title, leading many to speculate that he is the best player in school history.

To Pass or Not to Pass

Heads up: Tomorrow’s the deadline to change your grading option from GPA devastator to win/lose. For the hangover impaired, that means this is the last chance to save your ass. I too have enjoyed the thrill of guessing what side of a 3.0 my grades will land on, but I’m not as young and reckless […]

SB Advances to Big West Final

For the 11th time in its last 12 games, the UCSB men’s soccer team shut out its opponent Wednesday night. That foe was Cal State Northridge, as the Gauchos bested the Matadors 1-0 in the Big West Tournament semifinals at Harder Stadium.

Signa Offers Cures for Halloween Hangovers

We survived Halloween weekend, and it appears it was much quieter than last year. In my movie-based mentality, I went into the weekend with the intensity of the thudding “Terminator 2” theme running through my head. After three days of watching a lot of costumes and numerous drunks doing face-plants into walls, bushes and any other solid object that happened to be in their paths, I ended the weekend humming the “Benny Hill” theme.

Betties Battle It Out

I found out about last Saturday’s season-closing bout between the Mission City Brawlin’ Betties and the West Coast Derby Knockouts entirely by chance. At dinner with a VP at Citrix, she casually mentioned that a few of her coworkers would be participating in a roller derby bout the next day. I assumed that this sport had died out in the 1970s and now existed only as basically a glorified form of female pro wrestling on ESPN Classic at 3 a.m. I was dead wrong, as evidenced by the throng gathered at the Earl Warren Showgrounds for the 5 p.m. bout between the two putative teams (this was the Brawlin’ Betties’ last bout of its inaugural season, and the first game for the Derby Knockouts), as well as the copious signage that ringed the roller rink.

Dry Run To Check for Safety Bugs

In light of tomorrow’s planned test of the UCSB Alert system, local law enforcement officials are insisting they are prepared for any emergency.

U.S. Needs Market-Based Approach to Health Care Reform

For many months now (and probably for a few more), Congress has debated healthcare reform, the most important issue of Obama’s presidency. If Congress passes anything, even if it isn’t the most perfect legislation, it will undoubtedly be a huge accomplishment. But that’s the question, isn’t it? Are they devising the kind of healthcare overhaul we really need, and will it work?
