Since the start of conference play, there have been two major problems haunting the UC Santa Barbara women’s volleyball team – coming out strong and finishing off opponents after building up a lead. In their first game against Pacific on Friday, the Gauchos (14-5 overall, 4-3 Big West) were able to win in spite of these issues, pulling off a thrilling five set victory. Facing UC Davis on Saturday, they were not so lucky. The visiting Aggies turned the tables on the home team after falling behind two sets to one, escaping with a win following an 18-16 comeback in the fifth set.

For 100 minutes, Sunday’s match between UCSB and Seattle University unfolded like drama we’d seen before. After again finding themselves trailing a team that — at least on paper — they were predicted to beat, junior forward Kailyn Kugler turned in another multi-goal performance to send the match into overtime. That’s where the script wrapped, and the Redhawks (7-9-1 overall) wrote their own ending, finding the golden goal minutes into the second OT to beat the once-streaking Gauchos (7-8-1 overall, 3-2 Big West).
