A.S. Holds Last Session

Last night marked the final meeting of the 2008-09 Associated Students Legislative Council.

Kings of Leon Rock the KROQ Weenie Roast

While most students were at UCSB’s Extravaganza this past Saturday, I ventured all the way out the Irvine Verizon Wireless Amphitheater to see KROQ’s annual Weenie Roast. This year’s lineup was one of the best, featuring a host of huge names like Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Rancid and Kings of Leon (who traveled out to the Santa Barbara Bowl Sunday to play another radio-sponsored event, the KJEE Summer Round Up).

INTERVIEW: Rebelution

Minutes before Extravaganza ’09 opened its doors to a line of hundreds of people, I found myself in front of the Rebelution tent backstage. The reggae band whose members met in SBCC and then began to build the group’s fame in Isla Vista came back to its roots to perform at this year’s Extravaganza.

Venus Infers Rocks Relay for Life

Holding a crowd’s attention at Relay For Life is no easy task. With the fellas distracted by the perpetual wet t-shirt fest, compliments of water balloon tosses and water “Duck, Duck, Goose” games, and the ladies going bonkers over t-shirt decorating and fashion shows, getting someone to lend an ear to a song or two could prove as difficult as getting a Santa Catalina resident to swear off the booze.

INTERVIEW: DJ Raph

DJ Raph mixed in-between acts at last Saturday’s Extravaganza, making everyone – from the dance-music neophyte to the electro Gene Kelly – get up and bump to the beat of the bass. In between one of his many sets that night, Deejay Raph set aside a few minutes to talk to the Nexus about his thoughts and insights on the ongoing shitshow known as Extravaganza.

The Coolest of Crimes

What I’m about to say defies all of my liberal sensibilities, but it needs to be said.

College Cup of Tea?

“I’ll be honest with you: If we don’t pull this off, the College Cup will be in the East Coast for 10 to 20 years. It’ll be the one Cup that they’ll refer back to. ‘Well, we tried going to the West Coast in Santa Barbara, and it was no better than this or that.'”
