Smells Like… Chicken.

Today, we have a very special, experimental Weatherbox.

JMike To Run For SB Mayor

“JMike” is not your average Santa Barbara mayoral candidate.

Justin “JMike!” Michael is a 29-year-old musician with no prior political experience and a criminal record. He’s not affiliated with any political party and is the son of infamous Scientology minister and Ponzi schemer Reed Slatkin. He was recently a guest on Oprah.

Readers Respond to Freedom of Religion

Dear Megan,

Here on the eighth floor, we have a very diverse, accepting group of young ladies. We are devoid of haters (especially of the “playa” variety). We do not appreciate your assault upon our tolerant street cred nor your proliferation of lies to the UCSB community (“Freedom of Religion?” Daily Nexus, March 31).

‘Chos Shoot Up Stanford

Last weekend the UCSB women’s lacrosse club traveled up north to Stanford University in Palo Alto to play in the Western States Tournament. The #1-ranked Gauchos took on #22 Texas and #15 Michigan State on Saturday, followed by #25 Oregon on Sunday. No matter what part of the country their opponent came from, the Gauchos came away from each game with the same result, and ended the tournament with three wins and no losses. Santa Barbara is now 14-2 overall, and 12-2 against ranked opponents. The game against Texas was their first since March 14 (against Pepperdine), and their first since being voted into the top spot in the polls.

UCSB Hosts Car Inventors

An MIT engineer made a pit stop on campus yesterday to divulge the details of his team’s performance in the “Urban Challenge” – a government contest in which engineers and scientists developed self-driving vehicles capable of maneuvering through city traffic.

Readers Respond to Freedom of Religion

The religious, such as Megan Laffey in her opinion piece “Freedom of Religion?” (Daily Nexus, March 31), are constantly invoking the First Amendment any time they become offended. They are severely misunderstanding the nature of amendments and the protection it allows them. The First Amendment says that the government will not establish a state religion or prevent free exercise of religion.

Mustangs Trample SB

Already with one Big West series under their belt, the UCSB softball team entered last weekend’s series with Central-Coast rival Cal Poly with great expectations. However, the hot-hitting Mustangs took no heed and broke out the brooms for a three-game sweep of the visiting Gauchos (18-16 overall, 2-4 in Big West), including a marathon 6-5 game-three win that spanned 11 innings.

Rec Cen II Soaks Up the Sun

In a move to combat rising energy costs, the rooftop of the Recreation Center Expansion – which includes the popular MAC gym – has been outfitted with a battalion of 816 solar panels.

The Ideal Spring Kickoff: Floatopia

Is Floatopia the Halloween of Spring Quarter? If it wasn’t before, it is now. Floatopia is officially the first weekend of Spring Quarter at UCSB, reportedly drawing over 12,000 people for one day of Miami-style beach partying, self-sponsored and incredibly fucking awesome.

Bruin Bashers

#11 UCSB bounced back from a close loss to Claremont by obliterating UCLA 13-1 on Sunday.
