Microwave Oven Ignites Kitchen

Freshmen recovering from Halloween received a rude awakening Saturday morning when a kitchen fire forced residents out of the Santa Cruz dormitory.

Capitalism Will Right Economy

“When you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody,” Barack Obama said, in response to a statement from Joe Wurzelbacher – AKA Joe the Plumber – early in October. Joe had asked Obama why he planned to raise his taxes, arguing that the policy would be disadvantageous given the current economy.

Yes on Prop 2 for Animals’ Health

Factory farming. This relatively new, industrialized method of food production has come to dominate the global marketplace, but at a terrible cost. We are now learning about the horrific conditions in which billions of animals are raised in these farms, but this is a difficult issue to think about. Understandably, we are disgusted that the animals we eat suffer immensely before they are killed; however, we can easily assume that conditions cannot be that bad.

PD To Enforce Bike Rules

While campus authorities have only loosely enforced bicycle parking rules since the beginning of the school year, UCSB security officers say they will now start seizing all bicycles violating parking laws.

Regarding the Election…

Vote First. Don’t Stop Fighting.

Let’s talk about what happens AFTER Election Day.

On Nov. 5, millions of Americans and millions more around the world will be rejoicing, breathing great sighs of relief or hanging their heads in disappointment. We will experience all of these because regardless of whether the majority chooses Obama – which would represent an important step forward – many crucial initiatives and propositions on the ballot in various states will profoundly impact people’s lives, their marriages, transportation, schools, treatment programs and incarceration and all the others you have heard about. Progressive forces will likely not win on all of these.

The U.S. and Globalization: Can’t We All Just Get Along?

In his final State of the Union address, George Bush stated that “[America] is engaged in the defining ideological struggle of the 21st century.” Let’s be honest: Can we really know what the defining struggle of the century will be when we’re but eight years into it? It would be like Teddy Roosevelt claming that conservation would be the defining struggle of the 20th century. Or perhaps it would be like telling oneself he would have a glorious day after a successful tooth brushing, ignoring what could possibly happen in the next 14 hours of the day.

If there is one struggle that may define how history will look at the 21st century, it will be the realization of globalization.

Obama Looks to Bowl Over Some Swing States

We’ve known for many months that the presidential election will be won or lost in a handful of states spread out across the United States. It’s also common knowledge that Senator Barack Obama is polling historically well in a number of states that haven’t turned out for Democrats since President Clinton’s decisive 1996 victory. Old Republican strongholds like Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Colorado are in play with Obama currently slated to claim victory with a plurality of electoral votes, possibly winning a landslide victory defined by at least an 8 percent margin in the popular vote and over 350-375 electoral votes.
