The inaugural Big West Tournament for men’s soccer draws to a close Saturday, and the Gauchos have the opportunity to be crowned its first champion. They just need to get through UC Irvine.
I’m sitting at a restaurant with my five good friends from freshman year reminiscing about our crazy stories from the dorms when the topic of our old friend Brittany comes up. She lived down the hall from us and later admitted to suffering from severe depression. It got so bad that she ended up dropping out of school and moving back home because of it. We didn’t hear from her for a while, until one weekend during sophomore year she came up to visit for Cinco de Mayo. That night turned out to be a complete disaster.
So in day-to-day life, the ‘human has been known to double as an investigatory journalist. Recently, this secret life has brought you the news of the flannel epidemic here at UCSB, but now I’ve discovered something even more sinister: unbearably annoying voicemail greetings. For real guys… Do you really need to express your creativity via […]
Updates on the substantial fire burning in Montecito and Santa Barbara.
After a wild season of overtime thrillers and stunning upsets, the #7 UCSB men’s water polo team will punctuate the regular season with conference matches against #2 UCLA and #5 Pepperdine this weekend at Campus Pool. The Gauchos (15-8 overall, 4-2 in conference), look to keep their pristine 8-0 home record unblemished following a monstrous upset of #2 Stanford last Sunday.
For the last week, I have been reading the numerous angry responses to the recent passage of Proposition 8 in California, and I am frankly amused at how misdirected much of the anger has been. It is not that there are not serious issues involved, for I would never deign to insult either side by denying this; it is merely that I question the wisdom of those who have directed their anger solely toward institutions or groups who voted in favor of Proposition 8. Rather than expressing their anger toward those who have voted according to their convictions, which is only natural and to be expected in a democratic system, perhaps they should question the wisdom of the ballot initiative system itself.
An enormous blaze — dubbed the Tea Fire –ripped through the hills above Santa Barbara last night, potentially burning over a hundred homes and threatening thousands more. As of press time, the fire was still not contained.
I’m Bill Simmons. I fill up my entire column with more obscure tangents than a “Family Guy” episode. Boston.
Editor, Daily Nexus,
I voted “Yes” on Prop 8. Sue me. By proclaiming my vote, you’d think I’d just thrown a newspaper in a trash can instead of a recycling container, based on the reaction of others here at UCSB. Crazy, I know. My vote was not based on any religious beliefs.
