The UCSB women’s volleyball team split matches this weekend, sweeping UC Riverside on Saturday and getting swept by Cal Poly on Thursday in San Luis Obispo.
A proposition slated for next month’s ballot proposes legislation that will divert non-violent drug offenders from prisons to rehab.
As Halloween gets closer, you’re probably noticing a lot more cops out and about on the weekends. No, you’re not seeing double. Or maybe some of you are, but either way, there are definitely more of us out there. Although some may not believe it, we are there not just to write tickets and arrest drunk students, but also to stop fights, check on the guy or girl crying on the corner, provide directions and even answer questions. Yes, I write beer tickets, but on average, I tend to give the directions to Freebirds a lot more often.
The UCSB men’s club soccer team added two more victories to their record by defeating Berkeley and UCLA this weekend.
Thanks to some failed construction negotiations, Rec Cen swimmers will be able to get a few more weeks of laps in before the pool closes for renovations.
Editor, Daily Nexus,
I am dismayed that the College Republicans, as exemplified by Mr. Ross Nolan, have chosen to cultivate a culture of fear, uncertainty and doubt at UCSB (“College Repubs. Question MSA’s Legitimacy,” Daily Nexus, Oct. 6). Nolan claims that the Muslim Student Association is not a legitimate cultural organization because it has failed to “drop the radical politics and speak out against terrorism of all types, including Hamas and Hezbollah.” On its face, Nolan’s request seems reasonable. A closer examination, however, reveals a sinister side to his writing — an attack meant to simultaneously discredit a valid position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to create a division between Muslim and non-Muslim Americans.
Coming off an impressive showing at the Stanford Invite, the UCSB men’s and women’s cross country team stumble at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Pre-National Invitational. The Gauchos placed 22nd in the men’s 8000 meter White Race and 30th for the women’s 6000 meter Blue Race.
With only two weeks remaining until Election Day, UC students have shattered existing voter registration figures.
In a statewide movement backed by the UC Students Association and the United States Student Association Foundation, the UC Students Voice! Project has registered nearly 50,000 students throughout the University of California system. UCSB accounted for nearly 20 percent of this total, registering 10,241 student voters.
It’s 7:45 in the morning and a fourth grader at Isla Vista Elementary arrives for school, clutching his mother in one hand and an aluminum can in the other.
The can, which he diligently places in a large blue bag, may only be worth five cents when recycled, but after months of collecting cans and plastic bottles, students at I.V. Elementary School hope to raise enough money to send the fourth, fifth and sixth grades to science camps around the state. This is just one example of how I.V. Elementary is trying to go green, all the while teaching the youth of Isla Vista the importance of recycling and community goals.
