As Earth Day nears, the Santa Barbara community recognizes its importance, despite its small size, in the environmental movement. The story behind Earth Day is that Sen. Gaylord Nelson visited Santa Barbara after a 1969 oil spill left 35 miles of our coastline contaminated with oil-slicked beaches.

Although the advertisement in Monday’s paper regarding the Muslim Student Association’s ties to jihad is a subject of much anger and passion within the Muslim community here at UCSB, it should not be immediately discredited.
The UCSB track and field team returns to the oval this week with two events scheduled. First up for the Gauchos is one of the largest meets in the country with the Mt. San Antonio College Relays, which only a select number of Gauchos are signed up to attend. The majority of the UCSB track team will head down to compete in the Azusa Pacific Invitational, today, against competition from all over the nation.
