In an effort to prepare students and voters for this June’s 3rd District Supervisor election, UCSB Campus Democrats will host a debate tonight between the score of candidates aiming to become Isla Vista’s only elected representative.

The forum-style debate, which will begin at 7:15 p.m. in Embarcadero Hall, will include all five of the candidates vying to represent the one-fifth of Santa Barbara County that includes Isla Vista and Solvang. Campus Democrats Communications Director Evan Ingardia said the club had given each candidate three predetermined questions to address at the forum and that tonight’s topics will range from environmental protection – in sensitive areas such as Naples and Gaviota – to tenant’s rights.

The candidates include former 2nd District Planning Commissioner Doreen Farr, I.V. Medical Clinic founder Dr. David Bearman, current Los Olivos School District board member Steven Pappas, former Solvang Mayor Dave Smyser and former Buellton Mayor Victoria Pointer. Candidates will also have the opportunity to compare and contrast their platforms to those of current supervisor, Brooks Firestone, who is stepping down in June.

Ingardia said the debate was an important step in understanding the candidates and that it was imperative for students and I.V. residents to attend.

“It is critical for UCSB students to interact with candidates they feel are best suited to serve their interests at the county level,” Ingardia said.

Campus Democrats President Chrissy Elles said she expects to fill the room because of the election’s importance to I.V. residents.

“The 3rd District [Supervisor] is I.V.’s only political representative,” Elles said. “Since I.V. is unincorporated, we don’t have a mayor or councilmember to turn to when we’re upset with how things are going.”

Elles said those attending are welcome to enjoy free Silvergreen’s food provided by the Associated Student’s External Vice President of Local Affairs Office.
