I would like to take this opportunity to clear up a common misconception among UCSB students: it’s okay to go out in the rain. It won’t hurt you.
UCSB student Eli Weiner was stabbed in the back early Sunday morning while leaving a house party on Del Playa Drive.
Deputies were walking westbound on the 6500 block of DP when they heard partygoers yelling obscenities, according to the Isla Vista Foot Patrol police report. As the officers came closer to the scene, a number of people ran away. The victim’s friends, Henry Martz and Eric Volan, were found standing on both sides of Weiner, holding him up.
The UCSB men’s water polo team went down to the Southern California Tournament looking to make a statement and wound up with a piece of humble pie. The Gauchos lost their opener, averting their anticipated match against USC and eliminating their hopes of winning the tournament. However, the #7 Gauchos (16-8 overall) were able to rebound by winning their remaining games, which was good enough to place them ninth in the tournament that featured 14 of the top 20 teams in the nation.
Blocking the passage of bills regarding financial aid for undocumented students and textbook affordability, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued two vetoes on Saturday.
The governor vetoed Senate Bill One, the California Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, or D.R.E.A.M. Act, and Senate Bill 832 – the College Textbook Affordability Act. However, he did sign Assembly Bill 1548, an alternative textbook bill which requires both university bookstores to release the textbook wholesale price and for publishers to print a list of revisions made to new editions. This alternative bill known as the College Textbook Transparency Act becomes effective in 2010.
The UCSB’s women’s swimming team opened their season with a dual meet against Pac-10 schools UCLA (3-0 overall) and Oregon State (1-2 overall) at Campus Pool over the weekend. The Gauchos came away with mixed results, defeating the Beavers 155-107 but losing to the Bruins 160-102.
Saturday’s Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. was a tale of two Gaucho cross country squads.
The women’s team finished in 11th place with 293 points behind a strong performance from senior Bethany Nickless, but the men struggled to a 24th place result and their top finisher, senior Mike Powers, wound up placing 73rd overall.
The Gauchos dropped their first road game of the season yesterday with a 2-1 loss at UC Irvine. The loss snaps an eight-game unbeaten streak in Big West play for Santa Barbara (5-7-2 overall, 2-1 in the Big West). The Anteaters (7-5-1, 1-1 in the Big West) started the scoring off early, ending a string of passes with a shot from freshman forward Tanya Taylor that beat senior goalkeeper Katie Wright in the eighth minute. The loss leaves the Gauchos disappointed, especially considering their hot start to the Big West season.
Junior co-captain and outside hitter Lauren McLaughlin led the UCSB’s women’s volleyball team to their second conference win against UC Riverside (5-13 overall, 1-6 in Big West) 3-1 in Highlander territory. McLaughlin posted 22 kills, six digs and four block assists for the Gauchos (7-12 overall, 2-5 in Big West) on Saturday night.
