Even though “love of the game” was probably not the tournament’s main draw, the bikini-clad ladies and half-naked gentlemen of Saturday’s All Sorority Volleyball Tournament actually found time for a volleyball competition on Saturday- in between trips to the beer garden, of course.

The tournament christened its new location at East Beach in downtown Santa Barbara this weekend with an alcohol-soaked competition, attended by a large crowd of intoxicated onlookers and half-dressed sorority girls from all over California. The charity event, hosted by Alpha Tau Omega and held for the Kidney Cancer Association, raised $12,000 and was complete with a beer garden for people 21 and over, and plenty of SoBe energy drinks provided by the sponsoring company.

“Most of the greeks came out, but I talked to a lot of people who weren’t affiliated. We have it every year so people know when it’s coming,” ATO philanthropy chair Mirza Ibrahimovic, a third-year business economics major said. “Also, its Alumni Weekend and people remember the tournament.”

Played out on eight courts, the tournament saw throngs of yelling fans at the sidelines of a fenced-in portion of East Beach, while a deejay kept music fueling the partylike atmosphere and the beer garden stayed steadily packed. It played out into the late afternoon, ending in a championship match where Alpha Delta Pi fell to Alpha Chi Omega.

“We’ve been up since eight,” undeclared first-year Elexis Feldbrill said at East Beach. “They played like five or six games, but now we won. So we’re all happy.”

The tournament was banished from Isla Vista soil this year by the I.V. Foot Patrol and Isla Vista Recreation and Park District after overcrowding and a large amount of public intoxication arrests at last year’s event drew complaints. ASVT seemed to prosper at East Beach this weekend, although second-year business economics major and ATO member Hunter Penland said the fraternity would need to supply more buses than it did this year.

“I’d say we really needed like five buses instead of three,” Penland said.
