The UCSB track and field team recorded one win and three regional qualifying marks this weekend while competing in two events.

The majority of the squad competed at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite at UCLA, while some of the runners went to the Mt. SAC Relays.

Senior thrower Eugene Bradley was the sole winner for the Gauchos on the weekend, and his effort in the hammer throw improved his previous regional-qualifying efforts. Bradley, who competes in both the hammer and shot put, tossed the hammer 211’2″, smashing into the top 20 throws in the nation for the season. Also throwing well was junior Jeff Stewart, who qualified for the NCAA West regional tournament with a 55’3.5″ mark in shot put. Stewart, whose effort was good enough for second place, has qualified for the regional tournament the last two years.

The women’s side of the field team had an excellent day as well, led by senior thrower Amy Haapanen who topped all collegiate athletes in the hammer throw. Fellow senior Heather Quinn followed Haapanen with her fourth-place finish. Junior thrower Jamie Schwarzbach threw her career best in the shot put with a 44’0″ mark and senior jumper Ashley Coelho recorded a season best 38′ 6.25″ in triple jump.

The invite marked the return to the track of a few injured Gauchos. Senior middle distance runner Tetlo Emmen ran his first 800-meter of the season with a time of 1:52.89 to finish in third place, qualifying for the conference tournament. Junior distance runner Chris Ashley made his season debut in the 5000-meter with a 14:25.31 showing. Freshman distance runner Julian DeRubira had the standout 5000-meter performance of the day with a 14:43.61, an unofficial UCSB freshman record.

Also back at full strength for UCSB was junior sprinter Max Bellissimo, who ran a personal best 48.26 seconds in the 400-meter and 22.06 in the 200-meter, finishing third and second, respectively. Junior sprinter Kerry Gamble ran the 400-meter in 55.12, the best of the collegiate competitors and second overall. Freshman hurdler Andrew Johnston qualified for the conference tournament with a 400-meter hurdles time of 55.97, and fellow freshman Alyssa Brown grabbed fifth place in the 800-meter with a 2:13.67 time.

A few of Santa Barbara’s distance runners competed in the Mt. SAC Relays over the weekend, and sophomore Danielle Domenichelli led the group with 4:27:42 1500-meter run that qualified her for the regional tournament. Senior Mike Chavez also qualified for the regionals with a 3:47.72 in the 1500. Senior Micah Tyhurst just missed a regional qualifier with a 9:09.09 time in the steeplechase, while sophomore Scott Smith ran a personal best in the same event with 9:19.46.
