After being extradited from Mexico City, a man listed on the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept.’s 10 most wanted list is now behind bars, three years after he allegedly raped a woman in Isla Vista.

Tomas Rosales, who arrived at the Santa Barbara County Jail on March 7, is being held without bail on charges of kidnapping and raping a woman in a laundry room. Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Dept. spokesman Sgt. Erik Raney said Rosales’ identity was discovered through DNA evidence. Local detectives recently found out the man was living in Ixtlahuacatengo, Mexico, with his wife, children and mother-in-law.

Rosales allegedly attacked the 32-year-old woman on Dec. 12, 2003 at 5:30 a.m. as she was walking home from working at a local restaurant in I.V., Raney said. The suspect allegedly held a knife to the victim’s neck and forced her into a laundry room where he allegedly raped her.

A provisional arrest warrant was completed and authorized, and a United States Marshals office – from the Los Angeles Regional Fugitive Task Force – contacted the Mexico City Field Office and coordinated an arrest at Rosales residence on Oct. 18, 2006.

With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, Rosales was transported from the Mexico Federal Prison to Santa Barbara County Jail, Raney said.

Rosales will stand trial in the Santa Barbara County Superior Court for rape, kidnap and other related charges.
