Speaking with regard to the article concerning the diversification of the UC system (“Group Seeks to Diversify UC System,” Mar. 7, Daily Nexus). I was particularly interested in the Admissions by Exception program. However, when I researched the program, I found that its policies had already been in effect in the UC system since the Spring Quarter of the 1997-1998 year, contrary to what was implied in the article. Furthermore, I have issues with ABE being applied to students because of sports. With regards to students, the UC system is first and foremost an educational institution. To admit students who do not meet the academic standards of UC admissions solely based upon their athletic performance betrays that standard of academic excellence. There are legitimate uses for the ABE system, but sports is not one of them.
