Editor, Daily Nexus,

I’m on Legislative Council. Before you ignore me, I want to explain some things about A.S. – the things you don’t hear about because the Daily Nexus doesn’t always cover them. Regardless of what you might think, I don’t hate the Nexus; I also don’t think they always make good decisions (like with Conquest). I personally voted no to freezing their fees and embraced the opportunity to have a column in the Daily Nexus. I think there are better ways to fix this problem, and so do other members of the council.

I want you, the average UCSB student, to know some of the things A.S. does because A.S. is so much more than Legislative Council. Here are a few examples: Shoreline Preservation Fund funds programs to better our coast and beaches; Student Lobby goes to lobby conferences and fights for lower student fees and student diversity; CODA (Commission on Disability Access) works on making sure all students can access all parts of campus, because right now they can’t; Program Board holds concerts and free movies; Queer Student Union educates you, the students, on queer issues; CAB (Community Affairs Board) does hours of community service for our community; and EAB (Environmental Affairs Board) makes sure we have a greener campus. If I could, I would write pages of what we, A.S., do for you, the student. Now, if you don’t like what A.S. is doing, come to our meetings, please. We cannot represent you unless you tell us what you want.

I want to make one thing very clear. We are here for you. We want to enhance your experience here at UCSB. But if you are sitting there saying to yourself that we haven’t done anything for you, chances are, you just haven’t noticed or taken advantage of it. So make the most of your A.S.; join a committee, come to our meetings, go to a free movie or concert, etc. We are here for you and we want you to be involved.

Hope to see you all in the A.S. Main Office soon.
