With only two weeks remaining until the Cedarwood Apartments tenants must leave, many of them are already feeling left out in the cold.
Bring on the machines! Please, I am begging you, oh, ogre of mediocrity that is UCSB housing: Bring on the freaking machines! What machines are these, pray tell? They are the little sensors that should be going on each and every door in the residence halls on campus. Right now, they are on the exterior doors of Francisco Torres – or is that Santa Catalina? I cannot remember exactly what it is being called this week.
After losing its first seven road games of the 2005-2006 season, the UCSB men’s basketball team won its first road game this season with an 88-56 victory over Montana State last night. The Gauchos (2-0 overall) hit their first eight field goal attempts and jumped out to an early 19-1 lead over the Bobcats (2-2 overall) after only four minutes of play. Following two baskets by the Bobcats, the Gauchos got back-to-back threes from junior guard Trevor Bing and freshman guard Paul Roemer to extend the lead to 25-5 midway through the first half.
The Goleta City Council got a big “Shame on you!” from about 20 community members last night when it approved a conditional letter of support for two proposed UCSB housing projects. The council’s approval of the letter of support for the two projects, which the university is undertaking to create over 170 units for faculty and staff members, drew a large display of criticism from a group of attendees at the meeting – prompting some to storm out of the building after the approval was final. The revised letter will now be sent to the California Coastal Commission, which will review the plans for the North and West Campus Housing projects – which will both be located in Goleta – at its meeting this Friday.
The Democrats are the superior political party. I admit it. At the game of politics which, according to dictionary.com, means “taking advantage of a political situation or issue, exploiting a political system or political relationships or dealing with people in an opportunistic, manipulative, or devious way,” the Democrats are clearly better, or perhaps less bad, than the Republicans.
With its eyes set on attaining a playoff spot, the UCSB women’s volleyball team defeated conference opponent Pacific, sweeping the Tigers 3-0 Friday night. The Gauchos also went on to defeat Cal State Northridge in a come-from-behind victory Saturday evening.
The Associated Students Finance Board allocated $3,250 between four student groups yesterday to support international and local political causes and in one case, sex education. In a brief meeting, board members fully funded the Foreign Affairs Club’s $750 request for its annually published Foreign Affairs Journal, and the A.S. state affairs organizing director’s $1,000 request to help pay for a conference on the current social upheaval in Oaxaca, Mexico.
The UCSB women’s basketball team traveled to Pauley Pavilion on Sunday afternoon to play #23 UCLA and came home with a disappointing loss.
UCSB students and Isla Vista residents substantiated the popular saying that “every vote counts” in last week’s election – as they played an instrumental role in the midterm race for the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s seat. Local turnout figures revealed markedly different sheriff candidate preferences between the UCSB community and the rest of the county’s voters – but the ballots cast by many area residents in favor of Lompoc Police Chief Bill Brown over the incumbent sheriff, Jim Anderson eventually prevailed.
