Angelides Rallies SB Support With Local Appearance

As his campaign’s theme song “I Won’t Back Down,” by Tom Petty, blasted in the background, gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides strode onstage yesterday at Santa Barbara’s Oak Park to ask for voters’ support in his showdown with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. With over 80 people in attendance, Angelides and a number of speakers criticized Schwarzenegger’s actions since taking office, noting his policies concerning education, the environment and last year’s special election.

Arrrgghh!!! There be pirates a’ swimmin’ in the ink here! But, seriously, how many of you have pirated something before, like games, operating systems, Office and DVDs? Aren’t you tired of even having to pay for those things in the first place? Then I have just what you need! Linux!

SB Sits Veterans, Men Take Second

Even with the Gauchos’ top runners getting some much-needed rest before the Big West Championships next weekend, nobody could keep up with the UCSB cross country teams during Friday’s Titan Invitational. The Gauchos defeated every collegiate team in the field with the #13 men’s team placing first and the #7 women’s team taking second behind the Cal Coast Track Club.

Measure Seeks Tax Increase for Transportation

Voters will have to deal with their commitment issues this November and decide whether or not they should continue to support the 17-year-old Measure D – along with its new baggage. The proposal would raise the current sales tax for Measure D in Santa Barbara from one-half cent to three-quarters of a cent in order to provide over a billion dollars for road repair, alternative transportation and expanding U.S. Highway 101. The measure would have a lifespan of 30 years, and over that time would amass $1.575 billion for the county.

Finding “The Man” Is a Highly Difficult Task

Growing up in my old hometown of Hialeah, Florida, complaints of “The Man keeping us down” were a common thing. According to the providers of the tales – mostly of the hippie or militant persuasion -“The Man” was some rich, white, Christian conservative guy who controlled the masses, had enormous wealth and could get away with anything he wanted, while keeping “us” (read: non-whites) down

Gauchos Keep Opponents Scoreless

The UCSB men’s club soccer A team swept its two matches this weekend, shutting out USC 2-0 and UCLA 1-0 to win its third consecutive league championship. The Gauchos (8-1-2 overall, 6-1-0 in the California Collegiate Club Soccer League) have scored 23 times so far, and have only allowed two goals to opposing offenses.

Speakers Examine Queer Issues

The first annual Michael Palm Lecture provided the campus with both a $1 million gift, and what some students felt was a polarizing force. In a day that brought another famous speaker to campus – author and nationally syndicated political columnist Arianna Huffington – Matt Foreman, queer rights pioneer and founder of the New York City Gay Pride Parade, addressed a packed MultiCultural Center Theater audience. While Foreman gave extensive praise to gay rights advocates, some students said he too harshly criticized opponents.

Liberty Belle: Censorship Should Not Be Tolerated

The sparks of controversy that ignited over the recent visit of distinguished political analyst and author David Horowitz really got me thinking. The more I thought, the more I worried. The irony of one reader’s insistence that Horowitz should not have been allowed to speak because of his attacks on freedom of speech was so blatant it bordered on comical.

Pro Sports Round-Up

To add to the slew of Week Seven injuries in the National Football League, it has been announced that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will miss at least three weeks of play with a strained ligament in his right knee.
