A hangover is not the only thing making UCSB students sick in Isla Vista, as a recent outbreak of salmonella infections has students running for the toilet. Michele Mickiewicz, deputy director of the Public Health Dept., said there have been 75 lab-confirmed cases of salmonella in Santa Barbara County since January 2006. This number of cases is almost double the combined number of incidents in the past two years – there were 45 in 2004 and 40 in 2005.
With six conference games remaining, the UCSB women’s volleyball team looks to close in on the league leaders with two Big West contests this weekend. The third place Gauchos (13-8 overall, 5-3 in the Big West) will host struggling UC Irvine tonight at 7 and second place Long Beach State on Saturday in a match that will be televised on College Sports Television.
Like most students here, I’m finding it harder and harder to get some leisure time. Trying to juggle lecture, discussion, lab, midterms, papers and a job has gotten me on edge. Wait, no, that’s a lie. I only go to class if there’s an exam.
Sober Halloween is one phrase most UCSB students do not understand, but Santa Barbara and Isla Vista will offer plenty of alcohol-free activities for the upcoming holiday. Organizations ranging from the Santa Barbara Zoo to Calvary Chapel to one UCSB fraternity will host the events that run throughout the weekend. While some events are targeted more toward children, others welcome all ages. The Santa Barbara Zoo will host its fourth annual “Boo at the Zoo” featuring the Trick-or-Treat Trail, Boo-Choo-Choo train rides, nightly costume parades and crawly animal encounters.
As it is for the rest of their classmates, this will be the biggest weekend of the Fall Quarter for the #13 men and #7 women of the UCSB cross country team. However, instead of celebrating Halloween, the runners will spend Saturday attempting to sweep the Big West Cross Country Championships at Cal Poly.
The War on Drugs is over! Pretty much over. Mission accomplished, people! Pretty close to accomplished that is. Good work people. I’ve prepared a speech for the Decider in Chief:
The Santa Barbara News-Press continued spiraling into its seemingly endless cycle of legal and journalistic disputes this week, as it dropped charges against former Business Editor Michael Todd but brought up some new ones against the Santa Barbara Independent.
A lot of this school’s students know what it is like to recover from a rough and rowdy weekend, and that is exactly what the #7 UCSB men’s water polo team will be trying to do in its pair of road games this weekend.
Last week, my wife and I took an evening stroll through the walkways of West Campus Family Student Housing.
Residents of on-campus housing will have alternative activities to look forward to this Halloween weekend if they decide to skip the annual holiday festivities Isla Vista.
