Seven months after Santa Barbara County officials halted the renovation of the structure that used to house Espresso Roma, construction on the Pardall Road building began again on Monday. The remodeling was shut down on August 12 after the county discovered that the building’s owner did not have a permit for the construction. Santa Barbara County Building Inspector Curtis Jensen said a building permit was subsequently approved for Isla Vista Spot, which will replace Espresso Roma, on May 17. Isla Vista Spot, which is set to open over the summer, will serve traditional Persian food and feature a hookah lounge. Jensen said the property has not changed hands since officials stopped construction on it over the summer. He said the owner of the building, which is registered to the Edwin Olsen Trust, fulfilled all of the county’s zoning and remodeling requirements before construction on the eatery started up again. Michael M., who declined to give his last name, said he is the owner of the new eatery. He said he is currently remodeling the building, and hopes to open the new restaurant in two months.
The topic about UCSB officials cracking down on students for off-campus offenses was not handled quite right in Monday’s editorial “Hey Teachers, Leave Us Adults Alone” (Daily Nexus, May 15). I would like to point out a few shortcomings in the column that bashed this issue. Hopefully, some will see my reasoning.
Tentative plans to build public restrooms on Del Playa Drive have been stalled, for the time being, due to a lack of financing and county support for the project. Santa Barbara County 3rd District Supervisor Brooks Firestone has decided to temporarily forgo the bathroom project, which was developed by his predecessor, Gail Marshall.

The ‘human was pleasantly surprised this morning when it read that the store at Buchanan now sells tequila and 30-packs. Much to the ‘human’s chagrin, the whiteboard was wrong. Poor ‘human, poor sober ‘human… Tuesday’s forecast: The ‘human wasn’t too surprised of the false advertisement, however, it does hypothesize that one day the Arbor will […]
At the U.S. Lacrosse Men’s Division Intercollegiate Associates (MDIA) National Championships, one goal can be the difference between a national title and coming up short. The UCSB men’s lacrosse team proved just that last weekend, advancing to the semifinals on a one-goal victory over Sonoma State before falling to #3 Colorado 6-5 Friday.
Knock, knock. Who’s there? Steve. Steve who? Steve, some random guy who is traveling across the country with 10 other people, going door to door asking you to give him money or a check with your personal information and in return promising you that in six to eight weeks you will see your first copy of Fangoria or Quilter’s Digest while he’ll be in Gluk-Gluk, Arkansas, selling more subscriptions of Teen Beat and Moss Growing Quarterly. Have you met Steve? Unfortunately, Steve seems to pop up in our town from time to time. Sometimes it’s magazine subscriptions to help a youth go to “Self Improvement” camp, or a chance to help Bo Bo win a trip to Fort Lauderdale during Spring Break to attend the “Daily Affirmations With Stuart Smalley” seminar. Yeah, right…
A 1981 moratorium restricting the creation of new oil and natural gas wells in sections of America’s oceans could be partially overturned in the near future by proposed Congressional legislation, a possibility that has resulted in resistance from local politicians and environmentalists alike. The potential amendment would allow natural gas drilling off the coast of Santa Barbara, as well as in the rest of the federally owned waters in the nation’s Outer Continental Shelf region.
