Reel Loud showcases a film selection as diverse as the wildest minds of the student body. Crossing over genres ranging from tragic drama to uproarious comedy, the festival entries include shorts about dance, betrayal, migrant labor, animation and breast implants. Promising something for everyone, the breakdown of Reel Loud highlights goes a little like this:
As another year creeps toward its end, we here at Artsweek are feeling a wee bit overwhelmed. With pre-graduation jitters comes a slew of culminating performances, exhibits and screenings that attempt – ever so boldly – to wrap years of scholarly work into a nice, entertaining package of artsy goodness. Like so many of their liberal arts counterparts, the Dramatic Arts Dept. students have gone above and beyond, bringing us eight days of original works written and performed by UCSB underclassmen. Starting this Friday and stretching on through May 27, these up-and-coming thespians bring us their version of the year’s grand finale by way of the UCSB New Plays Festival.
Among the hustle and bustle of the Electronic Entertainment Expo – more commonly known as E3 – in the Los Angeles Convention Center last week, there was an art exhibit of digitally epic proportions. The exhibit marked the public unveiling of 16 pieces of video game art that were recently selected by a panel of jurors to join the Into the Pixel art exhibit.

The ‘human decided that it was tired of being dark and gloomy and allowed the sun to shine for a short while today. Wednesday’s forecast: Despite the pleasant sun, unfortunately, the weatherhomework doesn’t to itself. Much to the ‘human’s chagrin.
In her five years at the helm of the UCSB softball team, Head Coach Kristy Schroeder has brought her team to the NCAA Tournament for the first and second time in the program’s history, and that’s only the latest achievement on her distinguished resume. Heavily recruited out of high school, Schroeder cancelled her recruiting trip to Cal after UCLA offered her exactly what she wanted: shortstop, academics and a strong tradition of athletic success. Schroeder played four years for the UCLA softball team and played tennis and soccer for the Bruins during her fifth year, making her the only female athlete to letter in three sports.
dmittedly, I’ve never been a great one with numbers, but there is one number I believe everyone should be readily and happily familiar with: the infamous 69. I know there are some of you out there who just can’t bring yourselves to doing it, and, if asked, you have a litany of complaints about why it just isn’t your style that range from “it’s selfish” and “I’m not coordinated enough” to “I don’t want my nose anywhere near someone’s you-know-what” and “I don’t like talking with my mouth full.”
Curbing alcohol violations in Isla Vista was a central theme at yesterday’s I.V. Commission meeting, as various university administrators, county officials and students discussed extending the university’s jurisdiction into I.V. and the possible relocation of the annual All-Sorority Volleyball Tournament. At yesterday’s meeting, IVC members discussed a possible Campus Regulations Review Committee proposal to begin punishing students for offenses occurring in I.V., such as the furnishing of alcohol to minors, illegal drug sales and arson.
Fresh off its second Big West series win the UCSB baseball team (23-24 overall, 8-10 in the Big West) takes a break from conference action as it hosts #20 Pepperdine this afternoon. The Waves defeated the Gauchos 8-1 in mid-April. Pepperdine (36-18) closes out its regular season with the trip to Santa Barbara and is preparing for this weekend’s West Coast Conference Championship Series at San Francisco. Since the two clubs last met, the Waves have won all four of their series and have posted an 11-3 mark including their current three-game winning streak. “They’ve been ranked most of the year and put together a good season,” Head Coach Bob Brontsema said. “They’ve played a good schedule and are certainly in the top six schools on the West coast.”
I did it. I took everything I stand for as a human being and threw it out the window. What made me digress to such drastic measures? Nothing more than a simple glance at my calendar: T-minus 14 days until my cousins wedding. And what first came to mind? Wedding cake? Dancing the night away with questionable relatives? Staking out the open bar? No, instead, my first thought was of my cousin’s wedding photos –
