Editor, Daily Nexus,

As many of you may have seen or been inconvenienced by, there was a Santa Barbara County project this past week that resurfaced select roads in Isla Vista. This included Del Playa Drive, Trigo Road, Camino Corto and several others. Each resident affected was given a flyer with the schedule and a description of the work being done. The “Slurry Sealing” was a “low-cost asphalt surface treatment that saves the taxpayer a great deal of money and preserves the existing asphalt on your street.” After not being able to bike or drive on my street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, I was at least comforted by the knowledge that our streets would be smoother and easier to drive and bike on. I imagine that many of you were as surprised as I was when that was not the case at all. The slurry sealing did nothing but make our streets closer to gravel – not improving road quality one bit. I was even more frustrated when I drove downtown Saturday and found that the Carrillo Street exit had been repaved and was actually smoother to drive on. Why is it so impossible for the county to spend any sort of money on us, considering the amount of sales tax we pay and business we generate? I, for one, would prefer the old streets back, and I’m disappointed once again that Isla Vista is still the neglected and disowned child of Santa Barbara County.
