Parking will be a true nightmare this Halloween as tow trucks prowl the streets of Isla Vista and a number of Goleta parking lots are looking for prey.

Beginning Friday, all cars parked on the 6500 to 6700 blocks of Del Playa Drive and the 1000 blocks of El Embarcadero, Camino Pescadero and Camino del Sur, will be towed. The streets will reopen to parking on Monday, but close again from noon to 4 a.m. on Halloween.

I.V. Foot Patrol Lt. Sol Linver said the ban on street parking will create more space for the increased number of partygoers as well as help to prevent car vandalism. A few years ago, Linver said, officers caught a man car-surfing down DP, jumping on and damaging 14 cars.

“By doing this, we save people thousands of dollars in vandalism damage,” Linver said.

Several Goleta businesses also plan to keep out-of-towners out of their parking lots. The Camino Real Marketplace on Hollister Avenue will prohibit overnight parking from Oct. 27 through Oct. 31.

Alan Wellman, who works for the shopping center’s management, said they close the lots to keep drunk drivers from leaving the center, a problem that has occurred in the past. Wellman said security will be on duty to monitor the lots.

“[Partygoers who park at the center] leave trash, start fights and break things,” Wellman said. “Consequently, violators of the policy will be towed.”

Greg Voigt of Smitty’s Towing, one of the towing services that will be at work in I.V. this weekend, said the cost of towing is $185 per hour, with an additional $48 per day charge for the amount of time the car is held.
