Local property owners, residents and students focused on the future development of Isla Vista and the UCSB campus at last night’s meeting of the Project Area Committee and General Plan Advisory Committee.

Staff from the Santa Barbara County Redevelopment Agency and UCSB officials presented their short- and long-term goals for upgrading the aesthetic appeal of Isla Vista and the UCSB campus at the meeting. In addition, University representatives presented a housing capacity study, which outlined what types of housing units the campus would construct to accommodate possible increases in the student, faculty and staff population over the next 15 to 20 years, and potential sites for such future development.

Redevelopment Agency Deputy Director Jamie Goldstein presented a five-year implementation plan for new projects in Isla Vista, which includes the enhancement of sidewalks and landscaping along Pardall Road and a redesign of Anisq’ Oyo’ Park. PAC/GPAC members voted unanimously to endorse the plan, which will go before the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors for adoption on May 16.

According to the implementation plan, the Pardall Road enhancement involves the installation of street furniture such as benches and tables, the construction of wider sidewalks and the design of a paseo area to connect Anisq’ Oyo’ Park and Pardall Road.
