An unidentified Santa Barbara resident died Tuesday from injuries he sustained following a motorcycle crash on state Route 217 near UCSB.

The man, 35, was traveling eastbound on state Route 217 toward the onramp of southbound U.S. 101 at approximately 1 p.m. when his motorcycle drifted toward the left shoulder and hit the guardrail along the center divider. The impact from the collision threw the man from his motorcycle, sending him over the guardrail and onto an embankment next to the highway. Emergency medical personnel treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead one hour later.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Donald Clotworthy said the cause of the accident is under investigation. As of Tuesday evening, the man’s name was being withheld until his next of kin could be notified.

Clotworthy said the man, who was wearing a helmet, apparently lost control of his 1999 Ducati motorcycle while trying to negotiate a right-hand curve just before state Route 217 connects to U.S. 101. No other vehicles were involved in the collision, Clotworthy said, and it is unclear what caused the motorcycle to veer off of the road.

Authorities plan to conduct a routine toxicological exam to determine whether the man was driving under the influence of any intoxicants, Clotworthy said.
