Federal Funds Flow Into Santa Barbara for Water Reduction

Local hospitals and businesses trying to cut back on their water bills will get a little help from the Santa Barbara County Water Agency, thanks to over $100,000 in federal grant money.

Arlo in Wonderland

It’s four decades later and renowned folk activist Arlo Guthrie is still humming the same tune. In conjunction with his concert performance later that evening in Campbell Hall, Guthrie took some time out Tuesday afternoon for a succinct yet memorable panel discussion with professor-turned-moderator Dick Flacks and former Toad the Wet Sprocket front man Glen Phillips in the College of Creative Studies’ Old Little Theater.

Slim Pickings

Signing up for classes is like choosing which kind of ass the ‘human wants from the 3 a.m. pickings on DP. I want something that won’t be too much of an inconvenience in the morning,

Men’s Basketball Season Preview

After a 2004-05 season which saw the injury-riddled UCSB men’s basketball team finish in eighth place in the Big West Conference, the team’s prospects already appear to be looking up – even before the first tip-off of the new season.

Hume Away from Home

I have a confession to make. I live in a hammock on the fifth floor of the Davidson Library. That’s right, I live in a hammock in a crawlspace on the fifth floor of the Davidson Library. It can get a bit cramped in there, but I don’t mind. The rent’s cheap. Besides, the library does sort of look like a hotel from the outside if you squint and cover your left eye.

Live: Arlo Guthrie @ Campbell Hall

I hate hippies. But I love their music, and I especially love crazy old coots like Arlo Guthrie. When I heard that the folk music legend was going to grace Campbell Hall with his presence, I shouted my joys from the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters. And so did Guthrie himself, as Tuesday night was a night of celebration and nostalgia for Santa Barbara’s 600 or so ex-love children.

Northridge Nips Gauchos, All But Seals Big West

The top of the Big West Standings just got a lot lonelier for #14 Northridge men’s soccer team after its 1-0 defeat of #13 Santa Barbara Wednesday afternoon. The Gauchos (10-4-3 overall, 5-1-2 in the Big West) need wins in their final two games and need Northridge (11-2-3 overall, 7-0-1 Big West) to drop their final two games if they wish to successfully defend their title of Conference Champions.

Students Control Halloween

I’m writing in response to Henry Sarria’s “Media Smudges I.V.’s Reputation” (Daily Nexus, Nov. 2). I couldn’t agree more that the media’s coverage of Halloween in Isla Vista is unfairly slanted to the negative, that I.V. in general has become a favorite scapegoat for the local community, and that our neighborhood has come to be known as an appropriate dumping grounds for unwanted behavior, open for use by anybody who can find a place to park.

Seized Costume Props Await Retrieval

The pirates and pimps stripped of their swords and canes by the Isla Vista Foot Patrol (IVFP) over Halloween weekend have until the end of today to retrieve their confiscated costume items before they are donated or thrown away.
