Private Political Rally Turns Public

Hundreds of protesters crashed an invitation-only press conference Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger held in Santa Barbara yesterday, as the governor attempted to rally Republican support for upcoming ballot measures.

More Sex & Drugs Than Rock

Last week my roommate suggested that we catch the Bloodhound Gang concert over in Ventura. He said the live show he went to in Iowa was the best damn show he’d ever seen. While not one to take any Iowan at face value, let alone one that ran in last year’s A.S. presidential race, I’m a casual fan of the Gang and felt it would be worthwhile to validate this hyperbole.

Women’s Cross Country: Santa Barbara Runs Sans Senior Superstars

With the 2005 season in full swing, the UCSB women’s cross country team is training for its most important meet of the season: the October 15th NCAA pre-nationals in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Del Playa Residents Get Off on Danger

It’s the closest thing UCSB has to a tradition: every so often, someone – sometimes an out-of-towner unfamiliar with the perils among which we live every day – imbibes a bit heavily and takes a death plunge straight off of the Del Playa bluffs. Such an event typically prompts a crowd of standard-issue concerned citizens – tearful relatives, bored activists, what have you – to make noises about state-mandated protection for the area: reinforcement of the ground, perhaps, or some sort of high-tech fence.

Ben Stein To Speak About Recruiters at UCSB

The contentious topic of military recruitment on campus will be the focus of a discussion tonight as celebrity Ben Stein visits the UCSB campus. The event, organized by the College Republicans and Young America’s Foundation, is being held despite the decision of the UCSB Faculty Legislature to postpone a vote on whether to bar military recruiters from campus on the basis that the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is discriminatory.

Our Special For The Day

You could tell by the way that sassy twentysomething waitress walked off with your food that it was a bad idea to ask for bacon instead of grilled onions and a side of Thousand Island salad dressing.

A.S. Updates By-Laws, Creates Positions

The Associated Students Legislative Council unanimously passed a bill to amend its legal code by-laws Wednesday night in an effort to create better lines of communication between local activists and A.S. executive officers.

Move Your Feet and Feel United

Vibrant colors, pounding rhythms and powerful motions are only some of the tools Ronald K. Brown used to convey a deep sense of spiritual and physical energy in last night’s performance of “Evidence.” Brown, who choreographed works in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, fuses West African, modern and club dance into a unique interpretation of tribal African movement and its relation to contemporary African culture.

Delays Plague Path Construction

Construction on the bike path between Broida Hall and Webb Hall began last week, four months behind schedule and slightly over budget. Project Manager Marsha Zilles said the path — originally slated for completion this month — will be finished in late Jan. 2006, depending on winter weather.

Live: Franz Ferdinand @ The Greek Theatre

If I were a girl, I would definitely want to have sex with Franz Ferdinand. Not all at once of course – if I were a girl I’d had have some class – but boy do these chaps have a hold on the art of appeal.
