Women’s tennis: SB Down to Crunch Time

It’s that time of year to put up, or, to be polite, close your mouth. With only six matches remaining before the Big West Tournament, the UCSB women’s tennis team (9-5 overall, 1-2 in the Big West) will play four conference foes in eight days, starting with Northridge on Tuesday.

Our Late Pope Was Not Without His Flaws

I woke up Sunday morning eager to check whether FC Juventus had won their weekly Serie A match, but a little surprise was awaiting me: no soccer that Sunday. Why? Apparently because “the holiest man on Earth” had died the day before.

IVRPD Seeks Vernal Pool Financing

A neglected vernal pool on Del Playa Drive may undergo considerable work to restore it to its natural state, if the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District (IVRPD) can find the money necessary to finance the project.

Santa Barbara Snags MPSF Postseason Tournament Spot

The #5 UCSB men’s volleyball team clinched a spot in this year’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Postseason Tournament after splitting two matches with #6 Hawaii over the weekend, giving its nail-biting fans reason to wear gloves this postseason.

Police Search for Motorized Tricycle Thief

The motorized tricycle of a disabled UCSB student reported stolen last Friday has been located, but those responsible for the theft have not been found. Naz Hassanzadeh-Kiabi, a third-year business economics major, said she found her black motorized tricycle Monday evening parked in front of Anacapa Residence Hall while she was on her way to the De La Guerra Dining Commons.

Darina Ahern, a 29-year-old native of Dublin, Ireland, sat on a blanket of Irish and American flags Monday morning, saying that squatting on cement and scrambling for glimpses of the elusive pop star was her equivalent of a beach vacation.

Week Honors Grad Students’ Work

It may not be Spring Break, but this week, graduate students are certainly welcoming the first annual Graduate Student Appreciation Week. The Graduate Division is hosting the weeklong event, which started on Monday and will continue through Friday. The week will include movie nights, stress management workshops and free massages.

Award Money To Fund New Research

Four UCSB assistant professors recently received awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF), granting them money to fund individual research projects on campus.

Spring Cleaning

I don’t quite understand why celebrities tend to die in clusters. Johnnie Cochran, Terri Schiavo, the pope and – most tragically – Mitch Hedberg all croaked within a few days of each other, and it seems like this sort of phenomenon has happened before.

Baseball: Tigers Sandwich Santa Barbara

The UCSB men’s tennis team has caught fire, winning twice this weekend and putting itself in prime position to grab the top seed in the Big West Tournament.
