Locals will make an attempt to rid Isla Vista’s streets of garbage and debris this Saturday, in honor of National Make a Difference Day.

The event starts at 11 a.m. at the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District (IVRPD) office at 961 Embarcadero del Mar and lasts until 5 p.m. IVRPD Adopt-A-Block coordinator Jacob Womack said gloves, bags, and tools to pick up the trash will be provided by the Adopt-A-Block program and the Shoreline Preservation Fund’s (SPF) Coastal Service Program – two groups that are co-sponsoring the cleanup day and regularly coordinate local litter and graffiti removal efforts. Attendees will also receive free food and T-shirts.

SPF founding member Laura Brands said participants can keep any money they earn by redeeming recyclable items. Additionally, groups of more than 15 people will receive $100. Smaller groups will earn $50 each, Brands said.

Womack said volunteers have collected cups, beer cans and microwaves at past cleanup days. She said Associated Students’ Community Affairs Board, members of the Coastal Service Program and a variety of sororities and fraternities are expected to participate in the event.
