The University of California Police Dept. is investing an assault case in which two unknown men driving a sport utility vehicle shot at two women jogging on campus with a pellet gun.

The joggers gave UCPD a rough description of the vehicle, and police are looking to identify the SUV as well as its occupants. The vehicle is described as a silver sport utility vehicle with a spare tire mounted on the back that had a black cover with white lettering on it. The vehicle also had a luggage rack on the roof.

UCPD Officer Mark Signa said authorities have a possible license plate number for the SUV and are following that lead.

The two women were jogging along the path adjacent to Lagoon Road near the UCSB East Gate entrance around 11:30 p.m. on May 27, police said. The SUV pulled alongside the joggers and shot at the women with a pellet gun. Two men in the vehicle could be heard laughing while they shot at the joggers.

One of the joggers was struck in the face, but both women did not sustain any serious physical injury. After the incident, the women returned to their residence hall and reported the assault to UCPD.

Police said anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact UCPD at (805) 893-3446 or Crime Stoppers of Santa Barbara County at (877) 800-9100. Callers can remain anonymous.
