Salud Carbajal has been elected the new 1st District supervisor with roughly 64 percent of the vote, while incumbent supervisor Joni Gray handily maintained her 4th District seat with 79 percent.

The 1st District, which includes Carpinteria, Montecito and downtown Santa Barbara, chose Carbajal over his opponent, John Gostovich. Carbajal has worked for over a decade as an executive staff member under current 1st District supervisor Naomi Schwartz. Gray, who has served as supervisor since 1998, beat out retired computer engineer Gerry Niesen to keep the 4th District, which includes Santa Maria and Lompoc.

Carbajal gave thanks to all who contributed to his campaign.

“I’m very proud that we ran a positive, aggressive, comprehensive, grassroots campaign,” Carbajal said. “Thanks to all the people across the community that supported us.”

The two top contenders of the county’s four-candidate race for superior court judge were James Rigali and Edward Bullard with 31 and 27 percent of the vote, respectively. The position will be decided in a runoff to be placed on the November ballot.
