In Friday’s Nexus, an article titled “Unmarriageable But Equal?” (Feb. 13) ran. The author claimed that to “de-evolve” gay and lesbian marriages into civil unions would be “one of the most degrading, ghastly things of all.” The author clearly doesn’t understand that gays in a civil union would receive the same rights under state law as any married person.

Many Americans consider homosexuality itself to be ghastly. Since the author compares gay discrimination to racial segregation, he clearly believes they do not choose to be gay but are born that way.

Now, it doesn’t take much to realize that human reproductive organs are designed for reproduction. Anyone who is born attracted to members of the same sex would not use these organs correctly, acting in a way contrary to the natural goal of every member of the human species. One might say that something is wrong with their mind that causes them not to function as a normal human being.

Interestingly, under the Vermont Civil Union Law, to be eligible for a civil union one cannot be of “unsound mind.” This might refer to those who have a mental condition such as Down’s syndrome, but it also could refer to someone whose mind is so skewed that they are attracted to members of their own sex. It is not ghastly or degrading to not allow homosexuals to marry, but in fact a case is much more easily made that legally they should not even be allowed to enter into civil unions.

I say that the gays should be happy that they are given any kind of recognition of their disturbing and unnatural behaviors and stop whining for more and more rights before our society becomes even more sickeningly PC. The Nexus should stop caving to the gays and stand up for logic and good old American values.
