The Big West conference announced Wednesday that it has officially reprimanded senior guard Branduinn Fullove of the UCSB men’s basketball team for actions during and comments following the Jan. 17 basketball game between Cal Poly and the Gauchos in San Luis Obispo.

After turning the ball over in the first half of the game at Mott Gym, Fullove raced down the other end and pulled down Mustang freshman forward John Manley and the officiating crew immediately charged Fullove with an intentional foul. After the game, Cal Poly Head Coach Kevin Bromley expressed his displeasure to the media.

“I’m not going to name names, but I’m not so sure he shouldn’t have been kicked out of the game,” Bromley said. “I’m going to have to look at it on film.”

The Big West reviewed the film and has released a statement in which it was determined that Fullove did commit a flagrant foul when he brought Manley down with two hands and that the act “should have resulted in his ejection from the game.”

The conference office also came to issue the statement after reviewing Fullove’s post-game comments about the foul.

“You don’t think [Cal Poly senior forward] Shane Schilling would’ve done the same thing to me if I was going up like that? They’d take me out. It was the same thing,” Fullove said to the San Luis Obispo Tribune. “I wasn’t trying to take him out. I just wanted to make sure he didn’t score. I really didn’t mean to hurt him but, I mean, if you want to whine like a baby maybe you should stay on the sidelines.”

Fullove received an official reprimand which, unlike a suspension or warning, does not go on record.

“It’s really a slap on the wrist. It was a reprimand for the foul and his comments,” Big West Information Director Mike Villamor said. “There are no long-term ramifications. Nothing will go on his record.”

Villamor expressed that the Big West reviews situations on the basis of when the incidents occur and that the conference could not speculate about future reactions by the Big West office.

“We’ve closed the book on it. We don’t foresee another incident,” he said. “We can’t really forecast what will be the response if something else happened.”

The UCSB and Cal Poly matchup is one of the hottest rivalries in the Big West with each team having extremely successful basketball programs.

“The rivalry between UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly has grown significantly,” Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell said in a statement. “It is the responsibility of the players and coaches at both institutions to maintain this as a healthy rivalry and not allow it to become something that could be an embarrassment to the game and the institutions.”

Santa Barbara did not suspend Fullove for his actions. Despite a fury of boos after the foul on Manley from them packed crowd of Mott Gym, the Gauchos did not substitute for Fullove after the incident.
