The UC Police Dept. arrested a 35-year-old male transient on campus Sunday morning after the man allegedly threw a woman to the ground and attempted to rape her.

The woman, a UCSB student aged 18 to 19, was walking near the Women’s Center at approximately 8:45 a.m. Sunday when a man she did not know attempted to engage her in conversation. When she attempted to walk away from the man, he allegedly grabbed her from behind, threw her to the ground and attempted to rape her. The woman’s screams drew the attention of passers-by, who forcibly removed the man from on top of the student and called police.

UCPD officers arrived and took the suspect, identified as Derek Holbert of Santa Barbara, into custody. He is being held at Santa Barbara County Jail. The investigation is continuing and there are no other suspects.

The victim suffered no serious injuries, UCPD Officer Mark Signa said.
