A two vehicle collision Thursday morning left a man dead and traffic backed up for hours in Camarillo.

At about 9:30 a.m., a big rig traveling northbound on Highway 101 in the slow lane had just left the Camarillo Ralph’s Grocery Store when a white pickup truck collided into its left side. Ventura California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Steve Reed said it is not apparent what caused the truck to crash into the big rig.

“Both the truck and the big rig veered off the freeway into a ditch, and the driver of the pick-up was ejected,” he said. “The big rig was going approximately 50-55 miles per hour, so the force was significant.”

Reed said the driver of the truck was trapped underneath his vehicle when officers arrived.

“One officer acted as a good Samaritan and actually freed the man from underneath the truck,” he said. “The officer managed to get his airway open and he was breathing again, but he died at the hospital.”

The big rig did not lose any of its load; however, the force of the truck did cause a 200-gallon fuel spill, which was restricted to a small area.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, died of blunt force trauma, Reed said.
