Editor, Daily Nexus,

I graduated from UCSB in 2001 and got a job on campus after graduation. Never in my life have I met so many rude and disrespectful people. I am referring to deans and department heads on campus. Just a note to those of you who think you have the right to talk to fellow staff persons like they are dogs – wake up! We deserve more respect than that! A Ph.D. does not give you the right to talk to other staff persons like they are stupid or have less worth than you think you have. And to those who have been on this campus for many years, with or without a degree, don’t assume that you know all the answers and have the right to tell fellow staff persons that they do not know what they are talking about. You are neither better nor smarter just because you have been here longer.

Oh, and I can’t forget those older folks that think they somehow know more than the younger staff on campus. Just because you could be your co-worker’s mother, it does not give you the right to treat that co-worker as if you really are their mother! Age does not equal knowledge; believe me, there are some really stupid people on this campus of all ages! If you actually listen to your co-workers, whatever their age, you may learn something that you didn’t know before.

Karma is a bitch, and for all you who feel the need to treat other staff disrespectfully, karma will be coming your way – and there’s no getting around it. A simple reminder: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It’s as simple as that! With that said, have a wonderful, event-filled, thought-provoking day!
