Three burglaries at unattended Isla Vista residences were reported between Oct. 17 and Oct. 20.

At 10:29 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, a resident of the 6600 block of Picasso Road arrived home and found his belongings in disarray. He reported that his bedsheets had been pulled from his mattresses and urinated upon. An inspection of the home revealed that approximately $1,200 worth of personal articles – including a Sony Playstation, paintball gun and camcorder – were missing, apparently stolen.

A resident of the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive reported a second burglary at 4:58 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. He told police that he believed a thief had entered through an unlocked door between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, and had stolen a VCR, a DVD player and a cable box.

A third burglary was reported by a resident of the 6700 block of Trigo Road at 3:02 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. An intruder had apparently entered through a kitchen window, stolen two laptop computers and left through the front door,

Sgt. Phil Willis, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dept.’s public information officer, said while the incidents were apparently unrelated, they are a reminder to I.V. residents to be careful when leaving their homes for the night.

“It’s important to keep all the doors and windows in every room locked when you’re not home,” said Willis. “That’s the responsibility of every roommate in the house, too. If one doesn’t do it, then there’s a chance of the house being broken into.”

Willis also said people should record the serial numbers on their electronic devices.

“Those are important,” he said. “Those numbers are the only way you’re going to get your stuff back.”

Other precautions people could take, Willis said, include not having a hide-a-key and keeping the house well-lit when the residents are out.
