A trench collapse at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez resulted in the death of one construction worker and the serious injury of another on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Firefighters from Buellton and Santa Ynez responded to the collapse of the 4-foot-wide, 10- to 12-foot-deep trench at about 8 a.m. Bystanders were able to free the head and chest of Aidan Palomar, a 26-year-old Lompoc resident, by the time firefighters arrived, but when the rescue workers recovered the other missing worker, he had died of trauma to the head. His name was not released.

Palomar was taken to a nearby hospital for a broken pelvis. He remains there in stable condition.

Because the Chumash land is a sovereign nation, both the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration and its California division are investigating the matter.

The trench was part of a new wing of the casino, which will be closed through the weekend.
