The UCSB men’s lacrosse team is deep into its season, and the losses are few and far between.

Last week the Gauchos added three wins to their total, bringing their record to 4-1 in Southern Division play and placing them in a tie for second place with UCLA. Since February Santa Barbara is 11-3.

Making up for the lack of April showers, UCSB’s goals have been heavily pouring down on its opponents and leading to floods of victories. Santa Barbara has scored an astonishing 49 times in its last three games, while only giving up 19 to its opponents.

On April 2, the Gauchos welcomed San Diego State into Harder Stadium, treating the Aztecs to a dose of onshore fog. After Spring Break, the Gauchos seemed eager to get into an offensive rhythm. UCSB scored 13 of their 19 total points by halftime. In the first quarter, junior attackman James Clark garnered two goals for Santa Barbara while freshman midfielder Will Patton, sophomore attackman Hank Caulkin, junior midfielder Ben Schooler and freshman attackman Luke Wilson, who also had an assist, scored one goal each. The quarter came to a close with UCSB holding onto a 6-0 lead.

The Gauchos continued to control the game throughout the second quarter, giving up one Aztec goal. SDSU’s lone strike failed to stop Santa Barbara, however. The Gauchos tallied seven more scores before the quarter whistle blew.

San Diego State wasn’t finished. SDSU scored three goals to the Gauchos four in the third quarter. However, big goals by freshmen Greg Fish, Stefan Isaksen and Thomas Schultz gave Santa Barbara its second wind and the Gauchos won handily, 19-6.

UCSB then faced off with UC San Diego to beat its division rivals 10-5. Within the first three minutes, Clark and Caulkins found the back of the net. Wilson claimed one of his two goals in the second quarter, helping to increase Santa Barbara’s comfortable lead to 7-0 going into the fourth quarter.

To begin the quarter, the Tritons scored five goals while Clark, Schooler and sophomore midfielder Matt Wagner gave the Gauchos three more goals for cushion.

UCSB next squared off with the University of San Diego. Saturday served as the Gauchos’ last regular season home game. Spectators could have mistaken the game for shooting practice, as the scoreboard read 20-3 in Santa Barbara’s favor by the end of the match. UCSB jumped to a 4-1 lead by the second quarter with goals from senior midfielder Rory Moore, two from Caulkins and one from junior attackman Sam O’Keefe.

San Diego’s zone defense failed to stop Santa Barbara as the team put six more in the net, including back-to-back goals from Wagner before the half.

UCSB looks to keep up the intensity as they travel south to take on rivals UCLA in the first round of the Southern Division playoffs.
