Two buildings at San Marcos High School were burned this weekend in what a fire inspector has deemed arson.

Santa Barbara County fire engines responded to reports of smoke billowing out of a classroom on the high school campus at the corner of Hollister Avenue and Turnpike Road at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday. The fire was extinguished by approximately 2:15 a.m., and an on-scene fire inspector was able to determine the cause of the blaze as arson by 7:55 a.m.

Flames consumed about one-fourth of the building, an 800-square foot modular classroom that the high school ROTC program had been using as a meeting place. The rest of the building suffered smoke and water damage.

Four engines then responded to a second structure fire at the same school at 5:10 a.m. on Sunday. A fire was burning inside a 100-square foot room near the school’s cafeteria. By 3:04 Sunday afternoon, the fire inspector had determined that the cause of the second fire was also arson. Two broken windows in the room were reported as well.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Dept. and Sheriff’s Dept. ask that anyone with information regarding the fires contact the Sheriff’s Dept. at 681-4100.
