Yesterday’s University of California Board of Regents meeting began with a Public Comment session featuring students and workers addressing the rights of union workers and undocumented students, as well as a proposal for a tuition freeze for the 2014 to 2015 school year, made by newly elected UC President Janet Napolitano.

The Daily Nexus sat down with fellow Gaucho, L.A. lawyer, and UC Regent George Kieffer to discuss his time at UCSB, where he advocated tenant rights in Isla Vista and played a unique role in campus-based protests of the time. Kieffer also gave an inside look at living life as a UC Regent during one of the most tumultuous times for the UC system, discussing issues such as UC online education and the controversial appointment of former Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano as the new UC president.

Last night marked the first Associated Students Senate meeting of the 2013-2014 school year, opening the way for students from several campus organizations to propose a resolution criticizing the appointment of Janet Napolitano as the new president of the University of California, amidst controversy over her work in U.S. immigration issues.
