In the midst of this summer heat, stopping by McConnell’s on State Street is a must. I’m a sucker for their Sweet Cream and Earl Grey Tea & Shortbread Cookies flavors, but when I saw that they had a new summer collection, I had to try it. McConnell’s teamed up with their partners to release three limited-edition flavors for the summer: Wild Sweet Clover, Honey & Cornbread Cookies and Olive Oil & Salted Almonds. Although they all sounded very unique and delicious, I only had the stomach room for a single scoop, so I chose to try the Wild Sweet Clover and the Honey & Cornbread Cookies.

The Honey & Cornbread Cookies flavor was my favorite between the two. McConnell’s uses wildflower honey from the hives in San Marcos Farms and mixes it with sweet cream to create the base ice cream flavor. To top it off, they fold chunks of their housemade cornbread cookies into the ice cream. I was pleasantly surprised by how subtle yet delicious this flavor was. It reminded me of the Sweet Cream flavor as it was very milky and the honey flavor came through little by little with each spoonful. The cornbread cookies did a great job at giving this scoop some texture, although I wish the cornbread flavor was a bit stronger. Overall, this new flavor felt like a fun spin on their traditional Sweet Cream ice cream, and I would definitely get it again.

I’ve never heard of any ice cream flavor remotely similar to the Wild Sweet Clover, so I knew I had to try it. It’s described as “distinctly sweet & vaguely vanilla,” and I thought this description was spot-on. McConnell’s collaborated with Regalis Foods to create this flavor, and although it definitely reminded me of vanilla, it also had hints of an herbal flavor, hence the name “clover.” This was less milky than the first flavor I tried, which I liked because it was more refreshing and fitting for a hot day.

It’s a shame that I didn’t get to try the third flavor of the summer collection, but based on these two that I did try, I’ll bet that it’s just as fantastic. McConnell’s never fails to disappoint, so I’d hurry and try out these flavors before the summer ends.
