UC Santa Barbara police and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s (SBSO) deputies were dispatched to the beach access point by Camino Pescadero Park at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the press release.

After confirming the existence of the remains, which consisted of a head and torso, Santa Barbara County Fire water rescue was then alerted to aid with the recovery of the remains.

Deputies later found what are suspected to be associated remains – a femur, fibula and tibia – early Thursday morning near UCSB’s Campus Point, according to a second press release sent out Thursday evening.

The body is “in a significant state of decomposition and incomplete,” Huddle said in the initial press release.

SBSO is currently unable to identify the age, sex and identity of the remains.

The office is currently working with the Department of Justice to gather DNA evidence and compare the records of missing persons in the Tri-County area, according to the second press release.

The Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office is investigating the cause of death.

Based on dental records, the decedent does not appear to be the missing 17-year-old victim from the Montecito Debris Flow disaster in January, according to the second press release.

There are no signs of foul play.

Updated 4:59 p.m.: This article was updated to include information about the additional remains.
