With a Starbucks around every corner and the Dunkin Donuts’ slogan, “America runs on Dunkin,” it’s no wonder that Americans really do love their coffee. Some need it as a little pick-me-up after a long day, while others cannot function until they’ve had their first cup. If you’re a regular coffee drinker, you probably also know that the different types of coffee drinkers go much deeper than simply “coffee drinker” or “non-coffee drinker.”

Your Average Joe: You enjoy the simple things in life: All you need is a cup of joe, some creamer and sugar. You probably own your own coffee maker or Keurig, occasionally treating yourself to a latte from Cajé or Coffee Collab. Once you have your cup or two in the morning, then you’re ready to conquer the day.

Sugar Fanatic: You like to drink “coffee.” Your drink is definitely 95 percent sugar and creamer with a splash of coffee. You use Frappuccinos as an excuse to have a milkshake for breakfast and drink your dessert in the forms of pumpkin spice lattes and white chocolate mochas. The Starbucks opening in the UCen has only enabled your access to your favorite coffee concoctions in between classes with the new Hazelnut Mocha Coconut Milk Macchiato and Cinnamon Almond Milk Macchiato just in time for spring.

“Just Black”: You view coffee as the equivalent of fuel, and you’re immediately drawn to the nearest source. Caffeine is caffeine and you don’t discriminate between 7/11 or the Arbor or Starbucks, sometimes even throwing in the occasional Yerba Mate when the going gets tough. You probably find yourself with a packed schedule or frequently having night shifts or pulling all-nighters. Perhaps, you even enjoy the bitter taste of hot bean water. My question for you is: Why? How?

Coffee Connoisseur: You swear on the superiority of the French press over the drip coffeemaker. You probably order premium roasts from Jamaica and are intrigued by the Kopi Luwak coffee, made from coffee beans digested by the Indonesian civet cat. Yes, cat-poop coffee exists. You would never be caught dead consuming coffee from a 7/11 and frown upon those “basic” Starbucks lovers. You’ve most likely been considering buying an espresso machine for quite some time now.

Half and Half: You equally enjoy both coffee and tea and are unable to commit to the titles of a “coffee person” or a “tea drinker.” Your favorite drink is probably a dirty chai tea latte in order to have the best of both worlds.

You may find yourself in more than one category, and that’s okay! We are all united by our love for the coffee bean, regardless of the different shapes and forms it may come in.
