MEATLESS SUNDAY­

A local group called Food Not Bombs will serve free vegan food at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Little Acorn Park (next to Bagel Cafe). Food Not Bombs is a large organization that spans the country and is a form of “franchise activism.” They believe that corporate and government priorities are skewed and allow hunger despite the abundance of food and food waste. Those interested in cooking for Sunday can email organizers at foodnotbombsislavista@gmail.com or look for more information on the Food Not Bombs — Isla Vista Facebook page. The dinner is held regularly every Sunday.

 

SELF DEFENSE

The Associated Students Commission on Student Wellbeing is hosting a self-defense class on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m. Participants will learn proper striking and kicking skills and will have the chance to feel the burn with strength and circuit training. The class will be taught by Santa Barbara’s Krav Maga, and participants can cool down afterwards with free Blenders smoothies.

 

PATIO FILM FESTIVAL

The Isla Vista Food Co-op will be screening a series of shorts on Friday, featuring places from around the world! It will be followed by a showing of “The Cat Returns” from Studio Ghibli. The co-op’s tea and spice curator, Daanish, will be offering samples of three different popcorns seasoned with spices: sweet and spicy shichimi togarashi, tandoori spice pop and za’atar. The showings will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will end at 8:30 p.m. Yum!

 

MAGIC LANTERN THOR

Magic Lantern Films will be showing “Thor: Ragnarok” at I.V. Theater on Friday beginning at 7 p.m. “Thor: Ragnarok” stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Tess Thompson as Valkyrie and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. The firm is directed by Taika Waititi and is the first film that he has directed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Ragnarok” is the third movie featuring the Asgardian character Thor. Hemsworth will revise his role as Thor in “Infinity War,” which will premiere on May 4.

 

IVTU GENERAL MEETING

The Isla Vista Tenants Union will be holding its first General Member Meeting for Winter Quarter on Feb. 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. the IVTU will be giving out free food! Woohoo! Representatives will be explaining the most common clauses that are found in leases. The meeting will be held at the I.V. Community Resource Building, which is located at 970 Embarcadero Del Mar.

 

PAINT NIGHT: SELF CARE FOR THE ACTIVIST

On Tuesday, Feb. 13, The Women’s Center is hosting a guided art class and an evening of self-care from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the UCSB SRB Multipurpose Room. Come relax, get your Bob Ross on and paint with friends! Take a break from your stressful life full of activism, and do not forget to wear clothes that you feel comfortable painting in!
