The University of California received a record number of applicants for Fall 2018, with over 221,000 students applying for undergraduate admission.
UC Santa Barbara received 92,017 applications from first-year applicants for the 2018-2019 school year, more than a 12 percent increase from last year, according to university spokesperson Andrea Estrada.
There was a 5.9 percent increase in transfer applications.

UCSB received 66,436 applications from California applicants, a 13.6 percent increase from last year. Applications from out-of-state students increased to 9,530, and applications from international students increased by 8.7 percent to 16,051.

UCSB also saw a small increase in the number of Asian applicants and a small decrease in white applicants since 2017. The number of black applicants remained the same as 2017 and made up 5.3 percent of the applicant pool.

The UC system overall experienced a 5.7 percent increase in applicants, according to the UC Office of the President. All nine campuses received more applications than the previous year, and 221,788 applicants applied to at least one UC campus.
“The steady momentum of increasing application numbers underscores the university’s standing as one of the best higher education institutions in the world,” UC President Janet Napolitano said in a press release last Thursday.
