Police presence in Isla Vista decreased for Halloween weekend, with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department falling by 22 percent and the UC Police Department falling by 16 percent from 2016 to 2017.

UC Police Department (UCPD) had about 55 officers patrolling I.V. this weekend. Through the mutual assistance program, officers from other University of California campuses, including San Diego, Riverside, Irvine and San Francisco, provided police services at UCSB.

The Isla Vista Foot Patrol (IVFP), a division of the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s office (SBSO), had about 40 deputies in  I.V. on Friday, 38 on Saturday, 9 on Sunday and 10 on Monday, according to Lt. Ruben Cintron.

Cintron said IVFP expects to decrease the number of officers in I.V. in upcoming years, but it will depend on weekend activity leading up to the holiday.

“We hope that we can bring it down further than that, but hope is not a plan,” Cintron said.

IVFP also set up barricades on Friday on streets in I.V. but took them down the same day due to inactivity, Cintron said.

UCPD had about 65 officers patrolling I.V. on Friday and Saturday and IVFP had about 100 officers patrolling on Friday and Saturday in 2016, the Nexus reported last year.

Kelly Hoover, SBSO spokesperson, said the weekend also saw less criminal activity in I.V. and on campus. Both agencies issued a total of 25 arrests and citations issued throughout the weekend.

SBSO issued three citations and two arrests on Friday and four citations and three arrests on Saturday and Sunday, Hoover said.

UCPD issued two citations on Friday and nine arrests and two citations on Saturday, UCPD Sgt. Rob Romero said. Four of the arrests were for public intoxication at the Thunderdome Saturday night, according to UCPD.

The majority of SBSO’s arrests were for residential burglary, drug possession, domestic violence and public intoxication, Hoover said.

Several citations were issued for a minor in possession, open container, driving on a suspended license and violation of the noise ordinance.

Hoover reported 29 arrests and citations during Halloween weekend last year.

SBSO also lifted the Halloween parking restrictions in I.V. on Sunday, three days before they planned to lift the restrictions on Wednesday.

The university spent an estimated $20,000 to $30,000 on advertisements urging out-of-towners to stay away from Isla Vista during Halloween weekend, the Nexus reported Saturday.

Associated Students Program Board (ASPB) brought DJ Tchami to the Thunderdome on Saturday night as part of the university’s efforts to deter partygoers from I.V.

In 2014, ASPB hosted its first Halloween concert with Young the Giant and followed up in 2015 with a two-night show featuring Fitz and The Tantrums and Snoop Dogg.

Halloween 2013 saw over 13,000 partygoers crowd the streets of I.V. and more than 200 arrests and nearly 250 citations in I.V.

Hoover said the weekend was uneventful and said she expects Halloween night on Tuesday to remain as calm. SBSO and UCPD officers will continue to patrol I.V. on Tuesday night.

“We appreciate everyone involved in the effort to continue the trend of keeping the event safe and local,” Hoover said in an email. “We thank the students big time for their cooperation.”
