The Isla Vista Recreation and Park District (IVRPD) accepted $13,000 from UC Santa Barbara this Thursday as part of an agreement to use the funds for park improvements and maintenance.

The IVRPD voted 4-0, with Director Charles Lopez absent, in favor of a resolution to accept the funds on Thursday. The resolution orders that the district accept the funds on the condition that 50 percent be used on Isla Vista Teen Center programs.

The resolution also requires IVRPD to use the remaining $6,500 for recreation programs that “benefit UCSB students.”

By accepting the university’s funding, the IVRPD waives its right to collect special tax on properties owned by UCSB for the 2016-2017 fiscal year.

The university’s funding will be supplemented by the approximately $250,000 IVRPD estimates to receive from the passing of Measure O, a bill that will tax property owners $28.75 for each bedroom in Isla Vista. The tax passed with nearly 80 percent of mail-in ballots voting in favor of the resolution.
