University of California President Janet Napolitano is undergoing treatment for cancer after being diagnosed in August 2016, the UC Office of the President announced in a press release Tuesday.

Napolitano has “consistently performed her wide range of duties” without interruption since the diagnosis, the press release said, but she was hospitalized on Monday due to side effects of the treatment.

The press release said Napolitano is now doing “extremely well,” according to her physicians. She will be discharged “in the next day or so,” according to the press release, and she is expected to return back to her normal duties “very soon.”

Napolitano’s treatment for cancer is almost complete, according to the press release, and she has successfully recovered from one prior cancer diagnosis.  

The press release said Monica Lozano, chair of the UC Board of Regents, was informed about Napolitano’s condition throughout the treatment.  

“While she is recuperating, UC’s senior leadership will continue to support President Napolitano in the management of the UC system and in advancing the University’s key priorities,” the release said.
